Kenya Coaching Course Level I

Lake Victoria with Kiboku, Teaching Hygiene Class, and Game 2

We woke up bright and early once again, Davis already making phone calls by the time light first hit my eyes. Going down to breakfast, we talked about how the day would be organized. This would be the last day in Kisumu for the team from Regis University. Quickly following breakfast, I applied the finalized grades in the computer and ran over to the ATM with Davis to withdraw 10,000 Kenyan Shillings; $100 USD. This particular ATM could not print the receipt and had a prompt asking you you would like to continue without receipt. When I selected yes, another $100 USD came out. So, this morning, in much an unplanned way, I withdrew 20,000 Kenyan Shillings ($200), which is a lot of money in Kenya. For instance, later in the day, I had a woman full of gratitude thank me for buying nuts that were only pennies in cost.

We visited Lake Victoria after a trip of approximately 45 minutes by bus. We waded in the water amongst the kiboku (hippos), which are the number one man-killer in the animal kingdom. Our boat came within 50 meters of the hippo.

We then went to run a hygiene demonstration in the local school that housed our coaching course. Because it is common to have a class of 60-80 kids, we were given ~100 students for each team of three, totaling five groups. I demonstrated brushing your teeth, with some comedic exaggerations of the process for fun. Thereafter, we gave a toothbrush and toothpaste to each student. On the board, the 12-year olds were doing logarithmic functions. Wow! That is a testament to the discipline and capacity of these young students.

We finished with a match (two fifteen-minute halves) against Davis’ u-16 Boys team. The game was rigged for our success (referee gave us every dead ball situation), so we couldn’t help but score a couple of goals and win.

Due to the internet speed here, I have photos to add and more to say, but have run out of time in order to wake at 5:10 am to wish the visitors off and start the new day.
